EXAMINATION OF THE NARRATIONS ABOUT UMM HĀNĪ'S BECOMING A MUSLIM

Umm Hānī Bt. Abī Tālib, the daughter of the Prophet’s uncle, is one of the female companions known for her narrations in basic hadith sources. On the other hand, there is no detailed information about her life. In particular, there are different narrations about the date of Umm Hānī’s conversion to Islam, which seem to cause various interpretations today. This study aims to present an evaluation of the date when Umm Hānī became a Muslim by examining the narrations in question under two main headings, “narrations showing that Umm Hānī became a Muslim before the conquest of Mecca” and “narrations showing that Umm Hānī became a Muslim during the conquest of Mecca” and to make a modest contribution to the literature about Umm Hānī. In the study, after giving brief information about Umm Hānī’s life, the narrations showing that she became a Muslim before the conquest of Mecca were discussed under the headings “Mi’raj” and “The Battle of Khaybar”, and then the narrations showing that she became a Muslim on the day of the conquest of Mecca were focused on. As a result of examining the narrations under both headings separately, it was determined that the narrations showing that Umm Hānī became a Muslim on the day of the conquest of Mecca were more accurate than the others; thus, it was concluded that she became a Muslim during the conquest.
