VİRTUAL MUSEUMS AND MUSEUM EDUCATION IN TURKEY IN THE CONTEXT OF SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHING

As an idea, museums, which emerged from people's interest in fine arts and their tendency to collect works, research and protect the materials of the past of society and the environment where these materials are located. Visitors have the opportunity to discover their own roots and cultural ties through museums and to be informed about different subjects. These multi-faceted learning environments, which are a part of the lifelong learning process, are places where out-of-school education is effectively carried out. Museums have also offered another option to their visitors as virtual museums with the effects of technology and digitalization. Thus, the need for physical space has been eliminated and conventional communication methods have been exceeded in order to meet different access methods. In interdisciplinary social studies courses, museums are places that support multi-faceted development that will ensure the permanence of what is learned, increase interest in the course, and positively affect students' gains in terms of sensitivity to culture and cultural heritage. For this reason, the study has been planned by considering the quantity and quality of studies on the subject of museums in the field in recent years. The study aimed to examine articles on social studies education listed in the Dergi Park academic database between 2020-2023 and containing the phrases "Museum" and "Virtual Museum" in their titles, using the bibliometric analysis technique. 21 articles that met the criteria were included in the study. It was concluded that there were few studies on the subject between 2020-2023, the articles were mostly focused on museum education, the qualitative research approach was mostly chosen, the interview form was used as the data collection tool, and the study groups in most of the studies consisted of students and teacher candidates.
