EXAMINATION OF DISASTER TOPICS INCLUDED IN THE 2024 LIFE SCIENCE CURRICULUM

Life Sciences course is a course that provides children with the opportunity to recognize natural events, understand changes in the environment, become aware of human-environment interactions and have information about disasters. The purpose of this study is to examine disaster topics in the general structure of the Life Sciences curriculum, in learning outcomes and explanations at each grade level. Qualitative research method was used in the study. The Life Sciences Course Curriculum and Common Text of Curriculums published in 2024 were examined by document analysis method. According to the results of the research, it is seen that disaster topics in the Life Sciences course are concentrated in the Nature and Environment and My Health and Safety learning areas. It has been determined that in the 1st grade, students are taught topics such as recognizing disaster types, determining what to do in emergencies, and complying with basic traffic rules; in the 2nd grade, students are taught topics such as gathering information about precautions to be taken against disasters, recognizing basic traffic signs, and communicating effectively with authorities in emergencies; and in the 3rd grade, topics such as classifying what to do in disasters, questioning what to do in situations that threaten security, and creating original products regarding the importance of complying with traffic rules are taught. It is seen that the program emphasizes that the number of practical applications such as simulations, drills, and hazard hunts should be increased in order to increase the effectiveness of disaster education. In addition, it is stated that supporting disaster education with activities to be carried out with families will strengthen social solidarity and coordination within the family. It has been suggested that the scope of disaster types should be expanded in addition to general disaster information in the curriculum and application principles, and that biological disasters and human-induced disasters should also be included.
