This research aims to analyze the technical and musical aspects of Maurice Ravel's Menuet sur le Nom d'Haydn. Using descriptive analysis and content analysis methods, the research thoroughly examines the piece’s form, harmonic features, thematic development, and stylistic elements. The motif created by Ravel, based on the musical equivalents of the letters in Haydn’s name according to the German notation system, forms the thematic foundation of the work. This motif is enriched with transposition, inversion, and retrograde techniques across different sections of the piece. The findings highlight the successful fusion of the traditional minuet form with modern harmonic and melodic approaches. Additionally, Ravel’s blending of neo-classical tendencies with his Impressionist style is observed within the piece.
The performance challenges of the piece are marked by the need for a balanced execution of ninth chords, parallel fifths, and pedal points. Smooth modulation, especially the clear technical execution of transitions in the B section, is essential. Among the performance suggestions, careful articulation, dynamic control, and a meticulous approach to pedal usage are emphasized. In conclusion, Menuet sur le Nom d'Haydn reflects Ravel's respect for the past and his intent to merge classical form with modern elements through musical cryptography. This research aims to guide pianists and musicologists in the interpretation and performance of the piece and is expected to contribute to music education and performance practice.
