THE MEANING OF THE PREPOSITION HATTÂ-حتى IN ARABIC LANGUAGE


In the Arabic language, the word is divided into three parts: noun, verb and letter. Many studies have been carried out on this division, which spreads over a very wide area. The word has a very important place in the Arabic language where a letter or even a movement changes its meaning. There are prepositions used only in nouns or verbs. However, some prepositions used with both nouns and verbs are mentioned. Each of these prepositions has a separate meaning as well as a meaning that it adds to the word.

In the study, ‘Hattâ’, which is counted among the letters that are parts of the word, is emphasised. The preposition ‘Hattâ’ is a preposition used both with nouns and verbs. When it is used in nouns, it comes as a conjugation letter. The inflectional letters ‘Hurūfu'l-jar’ connect the verb to the object and make the nouns that come after it metrical. When the preposition ‘Hattâ’ comes as the letter of attribution, it comes to connect the noun to the noun or pronoun, and the verb to the verb in the sentence. When the preposition ‘Hattâ’ is used as the letter ‘Beginning’ in the beginning, the sentence comes after it and the preposition ‘Hattâ’ does not perform any action in the following sentence. The scholars of Kufa state that the preposition ‘Hattâ’ makes the muzari verb mansub, and they declare that it nasb the muzari verb that comes after it. Some scholars argue that the preposition ‘Hattâ’ is used in the sense of ‘Fa’ for the cause.

In short, the preposition ‘Hattâ’ is used in the sense of the letter ‘Fa’, which is used as the letter of traction, the letter of attribution, the letter of ibtida, the letter of nasb of the muzari verb, and the letter ‘Fa’ used for the cause. It should be noted that the preposition ‘Hattâ’ is not limited to these meanings, but these are its prominent meanings in general.
