FUTURE EXPECTATIONS AND GENDER PERCEPTIONS OF TURKISH AND IMMIGRANT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS


Adolescence is a period in which the individual becomes aware of the roles attributed to his/her gender by the society and tends to behave in accordance with these roles. In this period, with the development of the cognitive structure, it is a stage in which the cause and effect relationship between events and situations is questioned, and based on these results, thinking about possibilities and designs for the future increase. In this period when the individual experiences a series of changes at the same time, being in a challenging experience such as migration makes the process more complex for the adolescent. The aim of this study is to examine the gender perception and future expectations of Turkish and immigrant adolescents. The study was handled within the framework of nationality and school type demographic variables. The study group of the research consists of female students with an average age of 15.25 (SD= 1.28) who are studying high school in Şahinbey district of Gaziantep province. Future Visions Scale, Gender Perception Adolescent Form and demographic information form were used to obtain the data. According to the findings obtained from the study, it was determined that the relationship between gender perception and future expectations was not significant and the future expectations of immigrant students were higher than those of Turkish students. In addition, it was observed that the traditional gender perception of immigrant students was higher than that of Turkish students, while the egalitarian gender perception of Turkish students was higher than that of immigrant students. It was concluded that the gender perceptions of adolescents differed according to the type of school, the egalitarian gender perception of the students in Anatolian High School was higher than the students in Anatolian Imam Hatip High School, and the students in Anatolian Imam Hatip High School had a more traditional gender perception, but their future expectations did not differ according to the type of school.
