Doğu ve batı tabirleri genel anlamda coğrafi terimler olarak bilinse de değişen, dönüşen ve gelişen dünyada zahiri anlamlarının yanında bâtini manalar ile de tasavvur edilmiştir. Coğrafyanın insanın kaderi olduğu prensibinden yola çıkılarak bu kavramlara yüklenilen fonksiyonlar farklılaşmış, “aklın yolu birdir” anlayışından hareketle benzerliklerine şahit olunmuştur. İşte farklı çağlarda ve muhtelif coğrafyalarda yaşamış olan Ebu Hamid el-Gazzâli ve René Descartes bu durumun en iyi örneklerindendir. Birisi doğu dünyasının Hüccetü’l-İslam’ı diğeri ise batı dünyasının düşünce ufkunu aşılayan isim olmuştur. Onların doğu ve batı medeniyetlerinin inşası yolunda ortaya koymuş oldukları emek, her geçen gün daha fazla anlam kazanmıştır. Günümüz dünyasında çokça başvurulan ilmi otoriteler olmalarının yanında, özellikle kimi girift meselelerin çözümünde düşünsel rol almaları, onlara yönelik merakları artırmıştır. Bu çalışmada, her iki düşünürün hayat hikâyelerinden yola çıkılarak yaşamsal; söylediklerinden hareketle de düşünsel mukayese yolu tercih edilmiştir.
Even though the Terms of east and west in general are known as geographical terms,it’s thought with both apparent and esoteric meanings in the changing,transforming and developing world.By departing with the principle which is “Geography is destiny.” , the functions associated with these phrases have been changed, by moving with the principle which is “Great minds think alike.” their resemblances have also been witnessed. Here, Abu Hamed el-Gazzali and René Descartes who lived in different times and regions have been accepted as the best examples of this situation. One of them became the evidence of al-Islam (hujjat al-Islam ) in the east world and the other one became extending the intellectual horizon of the west world. The effort they presented in the constructing the civilizations of east and west have been making more sense day by day. Beside the point that they are the authorities applied frequently in today’s world, especially their intellectual contributions to addressing complex problems have made the curiosity to them more attractive. In this study it has been gone the intellectual comparision way by departing both thinker’s life stories,by moving their life-sustaining sayings
