Değerler, bireylerin iyi, kötü, doğru ve yanlış gibi kavramları ayırt etmesini sağlayan temel inanç ve ilkeler olup, toplumsal yaşamı düzenleyen önemli unsurlardır. Latince kökenli olan bu kavram, güçlü ve kıymetli olmak anlamlarını taşır ve çok sayıda bilim dalıyla ilişkili bir niteliğe sahiptir. Sosyal bilimler açısından değer kavramını ilk defa Florian Znaniecki tanıtmıştır. Değerler, bireylerin davranışlarını yönlendiren, toplumun ortak hafızasını oluşturan ve toplumsal birlikteliğin sürdürülmesine katkıda bulunan önemli ilkelerdir. Türk Dil Kurumu'na göre değerler, bir toplumun sosyal, kültürel, ekonomik ve bilimsel öğelerini kapsayan maddi ve manevi unsurların bütünüdür. Değerler, bireylerin düşünce ve eylemlerini daha yüksek amaçlarla ilişkili hale getirerek, nasıl bir insan olmaları gerektiğini belirler. Toplumların varlığını sürdürebilmesi için ortak bir geçmiş ve hedefler üzerinde birleşmeleri gerekir; aksi takdirde bu birliktelik uzun ömürlü olamaz. Değerler, bireyin düşüncelerini ve davranışlarını yönlendirerek toplumsal uyumu sağlar. Bu değerler, doğumla birlikte kazanılmaya başlanır ve aile, okul ile toplum gibi sosyal yapılar, bu süreçte kritik bir rol oynar. Değerlerin eğitimi, bireyin bu ilkeleri içselleştirip günlük yaşamında uygulamasını amaçlar. Değer eğitimi, bireyin karakter gelişimini desteklerken toplumsal uyumunu ve sosyal hayatın devamını sağlar. Bu noktada eğitimciler ve ebeveynler, çocuklara rehberlik ederek, bilinçli ve ahlaki değerlere sahip bireyler olarak yetişmelerine katkıda bulunurlar.

Values ​​are important principles that direct the behaviors of individuals, form the collective memory of society and contribute to the maintenance of social unity. According to the Turkish Language Association, values ​​are the totality of material and spiritual elements that encompass the social, cultural, economic and scientific elements of a society. Values ​​determine what kind of person individuals should be by relating their thoughts and actions to higher purposes. In order for societies to continue their existence, they must unite on a common past and goals; otherwise, this unity cannot be long-lasting. Values ​​provide social harmony by directing the thoughts and behaviors of individuals. These values ​​begin to be acquired at birth, and social structures such as family, school and society play a critical role in this process. Education of values ​​aims for the individual to internalize these principles and apply them in their daily lives. Education of values ​​supports the character development of the individual while ensuring social harmony and the continuation of social life. At this point, educators and parents guide children and contribute to their growth as individuals with conscious and moral values.
