DETERMINATION OF COMMUNICATION EFFECTIVENESS OF PARENTS WITH CHILDREN WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES TOWARDS THEIR CHILDREN


This study was conducted to determine the communication effectiveness of parents with children with intellectual disabilities. Within this context, it was examined whether parents’ communication behaviors towards their children significantly differed according to certain variables. The study group consisted of 34 families (34 mothers, 34 fathers) with children aged 8–10 who were attending special education and rehabilitation centers in Konya. To collect data, the “Parent-Child Communication Scale,” consisting of 27 items and five sub-dimensions, was employed. The data obtained from the participating parents of children with intellectual disabilities were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 25.0. The results indicated that parents prioritize showing respect and acceptance, followed by establishing barrier-free communication with their children. However, they were found to be less competent in demonstrating openness to sharing and sensitivity, despite making efforts to solve communication problems. Furthermore, parents with an associate degree were observed to communicate with their children in a more sensitive and positive manner.
