SEMANTIC COMPLEMENTARITY IN QUR’ANIC READINGS BETWEEN INTENSIFIED AND LIGHTENED FORMS A SEMANTIC STUDY IN THE LIGHT OF LINGUISTIC EXEGESIS
This article examines a prominent phonetic and morphological phenomenon in Qur’anic readings, namely the use of intensification (gemination) and lightening in certain Qur’anic words, due to its clear impact on directing meaning and precisely defining the nature of an action or attribute. The shift of a word between two forms—one with gemination and the other without—is not merely a slight phonetic variation; rather, it constitutes a morphological change that leads to noticeable semantic differences, such as the intensity of an action, the strength of a description, the degree of emphasis, or whether an action denotes frequency, abundance, or lightness and simplicity. The study highlights that gemination typically yields forms with stronger or more emphatic meanings—indicating force, repetition, or persistence—whereas lightening produces forms that are lighter in structure and smoother in sound, often revealing subtler or calmer meanings depending on the Qur’anic context. By comparing readings in which this variation occurs, the article demonstrates how these differences influence Qur’anic imagery and how each reading adds a complementary layer of meaning that cannot be fully grasped through a single form. Adopting a comparative analytical method, the article selects examples of words that vary between gemination and lightening, studying their roots and morphological structures to determine their interpretive effects. It concludes that this phenomenon represents one of the most significant aspects of semantic complementarity among the ten Qur’anic readings, and that considering these readings together provides a deeper understanding of the verse and reveals the precision and eloquence of Qur’anic expression
