CURRICULUM-BASED COMPARISON OF UNDERGRADUATE JOURNALISM EDUCATION IN TÜRKİYE AND THE UNITED STATES: THE CASE OF ISTANBUL AND RUTGERS UNIVERSITIES (2004–2024)

This study presents a comparative analysis of undergraduate journalism curricula at Istanbul University and Rutgers University across the years 2004, 2014, and 2024. It explores how journalism education has evolved structurally and pedagogically in response to external frameworks such as the Bologna Process and internal drivers like professional accreditation and digital media transformation. Grounded in the comparative education models of Bereday (1964) and Bray & Thomas (1995), the study situates curriculum evolution within broader national policy and institutional autonomy contexts. Using a qualitative content analysis of curriculum documents, it evaluates changes in course structures, credit distribution, elective offerings, digital integration, and accreditation impact. The findings reveal that while both institutions have adopted more flexible and diversified curricula over time, Rutgers University has implemented a more systematic and student-centered design, including hybrid courses, modular specialization tracks, and digital ethics integration. In contrast, Istanbul University’s transformation has focused mainly on structural compliance and course expansion, with limited integration of applied, ethical, and digital dimensions. The results provide insights for the future of journalism education at both national and international levels, highlighting the need for adaptive, innovative, and ethically grounded curriculum models.
