The Life, Art, and Poems of Ozan Türkmen (Ali Parlak), which can be read as "The Remaining Words" in the folk memory of Hatay, carries the scholarly rigor of a master's thesis in terms of its form, while simultaneously becoming a powerful text of homage due to the tragic story behind it.
Fatih Mehmet Akyürek, who contributed this work to Turkish folklore literature, was a Turkish Language and Literature Teacher and a soldier of education who passed away on February 6, 2023, in the catastrophe of the century that struck Hatay. The sincere and equally sorrowful lines written by his advisor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Kürşat Türkan, and other professors in the book's introduction paint a profound portrait of Akyürek's identity. Just days after defending his master's thesis, and while dreaming of submitting his work to the institute, Akyürek, along with his family, perished under the rubble. He left behind not only an academic void but also this completed work, which he never lived to see published. This book is the most concrete evidence of his dedication to knowledge, his love for his country and nation, and the potential he possessed as an academic. His tragic loss further deepens the spiritual value attributed to the work, immortalizing it as the last words uttered by an academic.
This introductory and evaluative essay aims to first place Akyürek's work within the context of the Hatay-centered minstrel tradition, and then to introduce the poetic world of Ozan Türkmen (Ali Parlak) on the axis of tradition and modernity. The evaluation takes into account both the book's original structure and the author's advisor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. The academic foundation shaped by Hüseyin Kürşat Türkan's studies on the Hatay region and contemporary minstrels (Türkan, 2015, 2016, 2017) is taken into consideration; thus, a portrait of Ozan Türkmen emerges who not only documents the tradition but also opens up an emotional and intellectual "space of remembrance" for it.
