This article has been prepared using data obtained from studies conducted within the scope of the doctoral dissertation titled ‘A Perspective on the Civil Architecture of the Period through the Ayasofya Foundations Tahrir Register’, carried out under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Aygül Ağır within the Architectural History program at ITU. The dissertation examines the civil architecture of 16th-century Istanbul from multiple perspectives. The aim of the dissertation is to investigate the origins of a highly picturesque form of civil architecture—the Istanbul-based Turkish House. The research is based on visual and written sources. While the primary written source is the Ayasofya Foundations Tahrir Register (1519), one of the prominent visual sources consists of various depictions included in “Ces moeurs & fachons de faire de Turcz avecq' les Regions y appartenantes” (The customs and ways of life of the Turks and the regions belonging to them), a work published in 1553 by the artist’s wife after Pieter Coecke van Aelst’s death but drawn during his 1533 journey to Istanbul. In this context, the drawings of Pieter Coecke van Aelst stand out with their realism and strong documentary quality. The work in question is essentially composed of seven parts. Among the various points shown during the embassy delegation’s journey to Istanbul, the last two depictions focus on the city. The section on which this study concentrates is the sixth depiction, showing the view from the slopes of Kasımpaşa toward Cibali. Although Aelst’s depictions of Istanbul are well known among researchers, the remarkable potential of these drawings for documenting civil architecture has been relatively overlooked. This study aims to make that potential visible. The main framework of this article was presented as a paper within the scope of IGRS’25.
