COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY IN THE TREATMENT OF ANOREXIA NERVOSA: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIALS

The aim of this systematic review is to examine the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in individuals diagnosed with anorexia nervosa. Within the scope of the study, studies obtained through searches conducted in Google Scholar and PubMed databases using the keywords “anorexia nervosa,” “cognitive behavioral therapy,” and “randomized controlled trial” were evaluated. In line with the determined inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 7 randomized controlled trials were included in the review.

According to the findings of the reviewed studies, CBT, and especially its enhanced form CBT- E, was found to be effective in reducing eating disorder symptoms, improving psychopathological symptoms, and supporting weight gain to a certain extent in the treatment of anorexia nervosa. However, some studies indicated that CBT does not show a clear superiority over other psychotherapy approaches and that its long-term effects may be limited. It was also observed that more intensive and structured intervention programs may be more effective in severe and chronic cases, and that additional interventions alongside CBT can strengthen treatment outcomes in some cases. Furthermore, CBT-based interventions were found to have not only therapeutic effects but also preventive effects in individuals at risk.

In conclusion, CBT is an effective and evidence-based psychosocial intervention in the treatment of anorexia nervosa; however, treatment outcomes may vary depending on the severity and duration of the disorder and the intensity of the intervention. Therefore, it is recommended that CBT be tailored to individual needs and used in combination with other treatment approaches when necessary.
