A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW ON PANIC DISORDER AND CBT THERAPY

The aim of this review is to examine the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in individuals with panic disorder. This study employed a systematic review methodology and did not involve any fieldwork or the use of any scales. The studies included were published in Turkish and English between 2010 and 2025. These studies consist of randomized controlled trials. This review was conducted in two phases: February 2025 and April 2025. As a result of the literature search, 9 randomized controlled trials were included. The findings from these 9 studies indicate that cognitive-behavioral therapy is an effective method for reducing symptoms of panic disorder. It was found that face-to-face CBT, group CBT, internet-based CBT, video conference-based CBT, and blended CBT applications demonstrated similar levels of effectiveness. In particular, it was determined that focused CBT approaches targeting cognitive restructuring, interoceptive exposure, and catastrophic interpretations yielded more successful results. Additionally, it has been observed that the integration of digital health applications into standard CBT provides additional improvement in depression symptoms. It was found that internet- and video conference-based CBT applications are as effective as traditional face-to-face therapy and offer cost advantages. Response rates to treatment ranged from 60% to 80%, while remission rates reached up to 66.7%. For this reason, cognitive behavioral therapy is an effective method for treating panic disorder.
