CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COMPILATION DICTIONARY OF THE HASSA DIALECT - PART I

The region where the Hassa district is located has hosted various civilizations throughout history; the Hittites, Assyrians, Persians, Macedonians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, Mamluks, and Ottomans and even the Egyptian forces under the command of Ibrahim Pasha (son of Muhammad Ali Pasha of Egypt) have all sought to gain control over the Adana plains, the Hatay-Maraş depression, and the Hassa region. Compilation Dictionary was previously compiled based on collections from Turkish dialects. Although this is a voluminous work, many lexical elements found in the dialects are not included in it. The subject of this study concerns the collection of lexical items, a branch of dialect research. Using qualitative research methods -specifically observation, interviews, and document analysis- this study collected lexical data from the dialect of the Hassa district in Hatay province and analyzed and classified the findings. The collected vocabulary was compared with the Compilation Dictionary and the words were categorized as follows: those not found in the Compilation Dictionary; those used with a different meaning than in the Compilation Dictionary; those sharing the same meaning as in the Compilation Dictionary but used in a different form; and those used with the same form and meaning as in the Compilation Dictionary. The classification revealed that a portion of the collected vocabulary could be considered archaic relative to modern Turkish. It is crucial to document the vocabulary of Turkish dialects-which face the risk of disappearing over time- through such collection efforts. Studies of this nature continue to contribute to the Compilation Dictionary.
